Since 1 September 2026, Cameroon has been hosting a macroeconomic assessment mission from the CEMAC Commission, tasked with checking the country's fiscal policies against community standards.

The mission is led by Jean Claude Nguemeni, director of multilateral surveillance at the CEMAC Commission — a post he has held since 2017, after serving as chief of staff to the commissioner in charge of economic policy from 2013 to 2017.

Launched in Yaoundé, the work involves CEMAC's resident representative and deputy resident representative in Cameroon. An initial consultation was held at the Technical Committee for Monitoring Economic Programmes (CTS), chaired by Jean Tchoffo.

Three priorities frame the assessment: convergence of fiscal policies among the six member states, stability of the common currency, and stronger budgetary discipline — the pillars of CEMAC's multilateral surveillance mechanism, in place since 2017.

Bringing together Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Chad, the CEMAC zone relies on this mechanism to spot gaps between national trajectories and shared objectives before they turn into macroeconomic imbalances.

Cameroon holds a particular place in this process: as the zone's largest economy, its compliance with community rules directly affects the stability of the CFA franc and the sub-region's credibility with international financial partners.

Once finalised, the mission report will be handed to Cameroonian authorities and folded into CEMAC's next annual multilateral surveillance report, which reviews the economic performance of all six member states.
