Cholera reappeared in Cameroon's Far North region from mid-July 2026, first in the health districts of Fotokol, Mada, Makary and Kolofata, where cases of acute watery diarrhoea consistent with the disease had been reported as early as 23 June. Laboratory analyses then confirmed an outbreak caused by Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa.
The tolls released since keep rising. As of 2 July, the Ministry of Public Health reported 166 notified cases and 10 deaths. Later updates mentioned 585 cases and 19 deaths, then a provisional toll of around 1,000 cases and about thirty deaths across the region, spread over several health districts.
The figure that most worries epidemiologists is not the number of cases but the fatality rate. At around 6% in the early tolls, it sits well above the 2-3% generally seen in the major waves of 2022 and 2023 — often a sign of late or insufficient access to care.
The Far North is an area of recurring risk: proximity to bodies of water shared with Nigeria and Chad, unequal access to safe drinking water, population movements linked to insecurity. Every rainy season revives the water-borne risk there.
The response is built around the usual levers: water chlorination, treatment of cases in dedicated centres, hygiene awareness campaigns and reinforced surveillance at entry points. Its effectiveness will be measured by how fast the curve of new cases bends.
As long as the tolls remain provisional and diverge across sources, caution is warranted on the exact figures. What is established, however, is that the outbreak is not over and that its higher-than-usual lethality makes it an episode to watch closely.
