Fincart closed a $2.8 million funding round in late July, co-led by pan-African fund Launch Africa and by Antler MENAP, which focuses on the Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan. A modest round on paper, but one that marks a strategic shift for this young Egyptian company.

Founded in 2023 by Mostafa Masry and Nihal Ali, Fincart did not start out as a fintech. The company first built itself as a last-mile logistics platform before pivoting to what it now presents as an AI-powered operating system for online merchants — a tool that centralises finance, commerce management and automation for sellers who previously juggled several separate pieces of software.

The startup claims more than 450 active merchants on its platform and roughly $20 million in gross merchandise value (GMV) generated. Figures that remain Egypt-scale for now, but which justify, in its investors' eyes, the bet on AI-driven automation of online commerce.

Beyond the two co-leads, the round brings together a cluster of regional and international investors: Yango Ventures, Five35 Ventures, Bluestream Capital, Hi2 Global and Kalahari Venture Labs, among others.

The funds will go to three priorities: accelerating product development, strengthening the commercial and engineering teams, and consolidating existing strategic partnerships. Expansion into new African and Middle Eastern markets is planned for 2027, not before.

Fincart's case illustrates a broader trend on the continent: online commerce tools redefining themselves as an AI management layer for merchants rather than simple marketplaces — a niche where Egypt, with its already dense fintech ecosystem, often serves as a bridgehead before sub-Saharan Africa.
