Google renewed and expanded its Gemini Student Offer program, launched in 2025, to students in 27 African countries in August 2026 — with Gabon now joining Morocco, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa.
The offer provides 12 months of access to Google AI Plus, including the Gemini Omni tool, doubled usage limits and 400 GB of cloud storage, valid through December 31, 2026 for students who verify their student status.
To qualify, students must be 18 or older and enrolled at an accredited institution of higher education — a condition aimed at university campuses rather than secondary schools.
The choice of beneficiary countries is no accident: Google is targeting markets where digital adoption is growing fast, but where the cost of advanced AI tools remains a real barrier for students.
For Gabonese universities, often constrained by infrastructure and budget, free access to top-tier storage and AI resources could offer a real lever for improving the quality of education.
Whether institutions and students actually make the most of these tools remains an open question: free access alone doesn't guarantee transformative pedagogical use.
