Cameroonian rapper Tenor is making Hennessy Cypher history. Released Friday, August 7, 2026, the 2026 edition of this annual African hip-hop showcase marks his first-ever appearance — a first for Cameroon in fifteen years of the format.
Tenor shares the track with six other voices from the continent and its diaspora: Ivorian Suspect 95, South African Yanga Chief, Ghanaian Kwesi Arthur, Kenyan Fena Gitu, and British-Nigerian rapper Enny. The whole project is creatively directed by Sarz, one of Africa's most influential producers.
Another first: for the first time in fifteen editions, two francophone artists appear on the same Cypher — Tenor and Suspect 95, the latter widely regarded as one of francophone Africa's sharpest rap voices, blending lyricism, humor and social commentary.
Launched in Nigeria in 2011, the Hennessy Cypher has become, over the years, an annual showcase for the continent's most notable hip-hop voices, typically dominated by its anglophone scenes.
The inclusion of Tenor and Suspect 95 reflects a gradual rebalancing of the format toward francophone scenes, long left on the margins of this kind of continental platform despite their creative vitality.
For Cameroon's music scene, Tenor's presence on this Cypher offers a rare continental echo chamber — recognition that reaches well beyond the circle of francophone rap fans.
