Officially bilingual — French and English, roughly 80% French speakers to 20% English speakers — Cameroon still carries the imprint of a three-stage colonial history: German first, then split between France and Britain.
On November 13, 1995, at the Commonwealth summit in Auckland, the country joined the organization — becoming its very first member with a French colonial heritage, all while remaining part of the International Organisation of La Francophonie.
