Around 9 p.m., the calm of the small town of Tourou, in the Mokolo district, was shattered by a violent incursion by Boko Haram, reminding of the lingering threat that has haunted northern Cameroon for years.

According to an anonymous source from a local vigilance committee, the insurgents targeted an army outpost, leaving four Cameroonian soldiers wounded. Among the civilian casualties, a woman was killed, highlighting the vulnerability of populations living on the fringes of the conflict.

The attack is part of a series of incidents reported in the Mayo‑Tsanaga region, where security forces struggle to contain the jihadist group’s cross‑border movements, which exploit sparsely populated areas and porous borders with Nigeria and Chad.

The tragedy in Tourou revives residents’ fears, as their daily travel, commercial activities and even access to health services are threatened by the constant presence of armed fighters. The sense of insecurity fuels internal displacement toward safer parts of the country.

For the Cameroonian government, each attack poses a logistical and political challenge. The Ministry of Defense will need to reassess the strategy for securing outposts while strengthening cooperation with Nigerian and Chadian forces to cut Boko Haram’s supply lines.

Analysts note that the resilience of local communities will depend on the state’s ability to provide effective protection and support socio‑economic development. Without a coordinated response, the cycle of violence could intensify, feeding recruitment of new combatants.

In the coming days, Cameroonian authorities are expected to announce the measures being taken, whether additional troop deployments, humanitarian aid for the victims, or reinforced disarmament programmes. The fate of Tourou remains a crucial barometer of the country’s fight against terrorism in the Extreme North.
