A new vocational training centre has just opened in Cameroon's Ndé department, in the West region: the Centre de formation professionnelle en métiers d'hôtellerie, santé et petits métiers du Ndé (CFOPREMH-NDE), accredited by the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training (Minefop). Classes are set to begin on October 5, 2026.
Its intensive courses run 10 months, followed by a 3-month internship included in hotels rated at least three stars. Tracks cover hospitality, health (social care assistant) and various trades, with training delivered by instructors and industry professionals. The programmes are designed for job placement or self-employment.
The Cameroonian context makes this kind of initiative particularly useful: by the International Labour Organization's definition, the national unemployment rate is estimated at around 4.4%, but it climbs above 10% in urban areas and exceeds 14% among graduates aged 25 to 35, according to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics. Skilled young people therefore remain the most exposed, especially outside the major cities.
Ndé, known for its economic dynamism and tourism potential, had until now suffered from a limited supply of qualifying training, pushing many young people to leave for Douala or Yaoundé to train.
The three-month internship at a partner establishment is the programme's central asset: it puts trainees in real working conditions, familiarizes them with professional standards and improves their chances of being hired or starting their own business once they graduate.
In a region where local training opportunities remain scarce, the opening of an accredited centre has a direct bearing on graduate youth unemployment, particularly in the hospitality and health sectors where demand for skilled labour is rising.
The first cohort, expected in October, will be the programme's first real-world test: the graduates' job placement rate in the months following their internships will show whether the model delivers.
