On June 22, 2026, Cameroon’s capital Yaoundé hosted a landmark event for the country’s tech ecosystem: the official launch of the 5th Digital Innovation Week, an initiative driven by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.
The kick‑off was delivered by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, chaired by Minister Minette Libom Li, who emphasized the government’s ambition to position Cameroon at the forefront of the digital revolution in French‑speaking Africa.
At the centre of the week, the national Best ICT Project competition was formally launched, giving innovators a national stage to showcase their solutions, prototypes and applications in the hope of turning ideas into viable, job‑creating projects.
The 2026 edition places a decisive focus on challenges related to artificial intelligence and digital sovereignty, two pillars the ministry deems essential for ensuring the country’s competitiveness against global tech giants.
For Cameroonian start‑ups, the event offers an unprecedented opportunity: access to investor networks, specialised training and public‑private partnerships that can accelerate the journey from prototype to market while strengthening local capacity to control data and algorithms.
However, obstacles remain. Limited high‑speed infrastructure, a shortage of AI‑trained talent and still‑nascent regulatory frameworks demand swift, coordinated responses, or else promising projects risk migrating to more mature ecosystems.
Looking ahead, the Digital Innovation Week aims to be a catalyst for lasting change: if public and private actors can consolidate the gains of this edition, Cameroon could become a regional hub for artificial intelligence, delivering both economic prosperity and mastery of its digital identity.
