Norwich City ended their long search for a left-back by confirming, on August 4, the signing of Darlin Yongwa. The 25-year-old Cameroonian defender has signed a four-year deal with the English club, running until June 2030, on a free transfer.
The Cameroon international was out of contract at Lorient, where he made 97 appearances over four seasons, including several full Ligue 1 campaigns. His departure from the French club had been settled since the end of June, opening a period of negotiations in which several clubs positioned themselves.
According to reports circulating in recent weeks, Norwich had to fend off competition from Spanish, French and Turkish sides, with Besiktas among the clubs reportedly interested. It was ultimately the Championship club, England's second tier, that won the race, with clear ambitions of returning to the English top flight.
Trained at Cameroon's Ecole de Football des Brasseries academy before moving to France via Chamois Niortais, Yongwa joined Lorient in 2022. His defensive versatility, comfortable in both back-four and back-three systems, impressed Norwich sporting director Ben Knapper, who praised him as "a very accomplished player, whose combination of athleticism and technique makes him effective in all phases of play."
The player himself did not hide his satisfaction after signing. "I'm very happy, I've always dreamed of playing in England, and Norwich City is a historic club," he told the English club. At Carrow Road, he reunites with Belgian manager Philippe Clement, who is set to integrate him into a squad chasing promotion to the Premier League.
Yongwa continues his career across the Channel after four seasons in Brittany, where he established himself as a regular starter on the left flank. His transfer also closes one of the most closely followed sagas of the summer window on the Cameroonian side, alongside several other Indomitable Lions who remained free agents this summer.
