On July 2, 2026, the minister delegated to the presidency in charge of Defense, Joseph Beti Assomo, officially inaugurated an operational base of the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) at the Douala‑Bonabéri port. The ceremony, covered by Journal du Cameroun, underscores the government's commitment to bolstering security at this strategic site while stimulating the coastal economic dynamism.
Douala, with its 2 million inhabitants, remains the primary entry point for goods into Cameroon and a gateway for the whole of Central Africa. The port handles more than 80 % of the nation's maritime traffic, representing several billion dollars of commercial flow each year. Its vitality therefore depends on a smooth logistics chain and, above all, on the security of its facilities.
Authorities reminded that the coastal maritime sector faces multiple threats: piracy, illicit trafficking, sabotage and incidents linked to organized crime. Although these risks are generic, they have already caused delays and extra costs for operators. Strengthening the security belt therefore aims to reduce vulnerabilities and ensure the continuity of port operations.
The BIR, an elite unit of the Cameroonian army, is distinguished by its rapid‑response capability and intensive training. Stationed directly adjacent to the quays, the battalion will be able to react within minutes to any intrusion or incident, thereby limiting potential damage. This operational proximity marks a paradigm shift from previously more distant and slower responses.
Economically, the presence of the BIR should reassure both domestic and foreign investors. A port zone perceived as safe attracts more shipping lines, encourages cargo diversification and lowers insurance premiums. Consequently, Cameroonian exporters, especially in cocoa, coffee and oil sectors, could benefit from more competitive logistics costs.
Beyond Cameroon’s borders, securing the Douala port has repercussions for Gulf of Guinea littoral states. A stable port chain contributes to smoother regional trade, fostering economic integration projects and cross‑border transport corridors. By acting as a guarantor, the BIR thus contributes to the stability of the West‑Central African economic basin.
The coming months will be decisive in measuring the concrete impact of this initiative. The government announced regular monitoring of security and performance indicators, as well as the establishment of partnerships with private maritime actors. If the security and economic goals are achieved, Douala‑Bonabéri could become a model of defence‑development cooperation, inspiring other African ports to follow suit.
