It was raining on the Glasgow track on 28 July, hardly ideal conditions for a fast time. Emmanuel Eseme did not seem to notice: the Cameroonian ran the 100m in 9.83 seconds, taking gold at the 2026 Commonwealth Games — Cameroon's first medal of the Games.

The time carries weight beyond the medal itself. It erases a 28-year-old Games record, held since 1998 by Trinidad's Ato Boldon (9.88s) at the Kuala Lumpur edition. Five hundredths of a second better, for a record that had looked settled for good.

It is also a new Cameroonian national record and a personal best for Eseme, already the reigning African 100m champion before this race. A confirmation, more than a surprise, for a sprinter already established at the top of the continent.

Behind him, Australia's Lachlan Kennedy took silver in 9.85s — also breaking his country's national record — and Nigeria's Kayinsola Ajayi bronze in 9.90s. A three-nation podium, with three personal or national records broken on the same day.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games ended on 2 August after eleven days of competition featuring around 74 nations. Cameroon finished with five medals overall (1 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze), the fifth-best African delegation in the standings.

For Eseme, the Glasgow performance builds on momentum already under way on the continent. Whether that 9.83 holds for a generation, or Cameroonian sprinting has simply opened a new chapter, remains to be seen.
