This Thursday, June 25, the ramparts of Essaouira resonated with a tradition rooted in West Africa. The 27th edition of the Gnaoua Festival, one of Morocco’s most iconic music events, runs through June 28, promising a series of concerts unlike any other.
Born in the villages of southern Morocco, Gnaoua has traversed decades to become a cultural crossroads where Sufi sounds meet jazz, reggae, and hip‑hop. This ability to absorb external influences while preserving its identity makes the festival a living laboratory of contemporary African music.
This year, the festival brings together nearly 450 artists—a record number that underscores its international reach. Among them are the acclaimed Cameroonian bassist Richard Bona and Brazilian percussionist Carlinhos Browan, whose collaborations promise unexpected fusions of Gnaoua maâlems with Latin rhythms.
Preparations were overseen by Karim Ziad, the festival’s artistic director. On June 24, the Moulay Hassan stage, set against the ocean, hosted the final rehearsals. “It’s an intense moment of sharing,” Ziad said, emphasizing the importance of dialogue between Moroccan musicians and their foreign guests ahead of the inaugural night’s launch.
