On June 19, 2026, Douala, the country's economic hub, hosted an official ceremony marking the delivery of emergency food aid from the People’s Republic of China. The shipment comprises 880 tonnes of wheat and 1,630 tonnes of rice, valued at 20 million yuan (approximately $2.96 million). These staples, essential for food security, will be redistributed to the most vulnerable populations, particularly in regions where recent harvests have been hit by adverse weather.
To date, three of the five consignments have already docked at Douala port. The first batch, containing the entire wheat cargo (880 t) and 552 t of rice, has been cleared through customs and stored in the Ministry of Territorial Administration’s warehouses. The remaining two batches, which will complete the announced volume, are expected on Sunday, according to the schedule provided by port authorities.
This influx of basic commodities arrives amid persistently high domestic demand for cereals. National reserves, already under strain, receive a reprieve thanks to the contribution, which bolsters the government’s distribution capacity and mitigates the risk of a short‑term shortage.
Beyond logistics, the donation highlights the strength of bilateral ties between Cameroon and China. For years, Beijing has supported infrastructure projects and development programmes in Cameroon, and this humanitarian effort adds to an already diverse partnership that spans energy, education and more.
Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration praised “a gesture of solidarity that addresses an humanitarian emergency and reflects a lasting friendship between our two nations.” He noted that the foodstuffs will be swiftly routed to regional distribution centres to ensure effective coverage of those in need.
Local authorities have already mobilised public‑health and social‑protection teams to organise receipt, quality control and redistribution of the supplies. Distribution points will be set up in both urban and rural areas, with priority given to families affected by rising food prices.
The arrival of the final two consignments on Sunday will allow stockpiling to be completed and the large‑scale distribution phase to begin. The government said the operation’s monitoring will be transparent, with regular reports published to guarantee traceability of the food.
In sum, the Chinese donation is more than just food aid; it represents a concrete response to a crisis affecting Cameroonian households while reinforcing an international cooperation that could serve as a model for other countries in the sub‑region.
