Lake Nyos, located in Cameroon’s Northwest Region, is one of only three lakes in the world known to trigger limnic eruptions—a rare natural phenomenon where carbon dioxide (CO₂) trapped at the lake’s depths is violently released. On August 21, 1986, this disaster struck the surrounding valley, suffocating nearly 1,800 people and thousands of animals within hours.

Forty years later, the tragedy remains one of Africa’s deadliest natural disasters, yet it has been overshadowed by other global events. Now, aging survivors are breaking their silence to share the lessons of that horrific night and warn of similar risks across the continent.

The Lake Nyos disaster unfolded on August 21, 1986, in Cameroon’s Northwest Region. A cloud of carbon dioxide (CO₂) burst from the lake, asphyxiating 1,746 people and around 3,000 livestock. The toxic cloud spread over 15 miles, killing all life in its path. After the eruption, the lake’s waters turned deep red due to iron oxidation from the depths. Scientists confirmed that CO₂, seeping from the Earth’s mantle, had accumulated for centuries before being violently expelled. Survivors recalled hearing a deep rumble from the lake just before the deadly cloud appeared.

The Lake Nyos catastrophe remains a stark example of Africa’s overlooked geological hazards. Unlike earthquakes or floods, limnic eruptions are rare and poorly documented, which partly explains why this tragedy received little international attention. Yet, both Lake Nyos and nearby Lake Monoun pose an ongoing threat to local communities.

Four decades later, survivors’ testimonies underscore the urgent need for stronger monitoring and prevention systems. While degassing pipes have been installed at Lake Nyos, their maintenance and expansion to other African lakes remain inadequate. The disaster also raises critical questions about natural disaster management in Africa, where resources for research and prevention are often scarce.

For Cameroon, the Lake Nyos disaster marked a turning point in recognizing geological risks. It led to crater lake monitoring programs, though their reach remains limited. Today, survivors and their descendants still live with the trauma of that night, while authorities struggle to ensure long-term protection against such threats.

Forty years after the Lake Nyos tragedy, survivors’ voices serve as a warning. While progress has been made—including degassing systems—the disaster highlights Africa’s need to strengthen resilience against natural risks. By honoring the victims, Cameroon and the continent can turn this tragedy into a lesson for the future.
