On July 13, 2026, the African Development Bank’s Board of Governors approved a loan of €81.2 million – equivalent to 53.263 billion CFA francs – to the Cameroonian government for agro‑industrial development in the North and Extreme North regions.
The funding is intended to support the construction of multi‑purpose dams in those areas, a move expected to boost the local economy and enhance food security.
Agro‑industrial development is a cornerstone of Cameroon’s economy, and the loan should strengthen production and processing capacities for agricultural products in the beneficiary regions.
The North and Extreme North are agriculturally rich zones, yet they face challenges such as drought and Boko Haram attacks, which negatively affect crop yields and food security.
Thus, the AfDB loan aims to increase the resilience of local communities and promote economic development in these regions.
The loan forms part of a broader Cameroonian economic and social development strategy and is expected to be complemented by other initiatives to improve institutional capacity and infrastructure in the targeted areas.
Details on the loan’s implementation and anticipated outcomes are awaited.
