To capture a believable African jungle, British director Hugh Hudson skipped the studio: between November 1982 and April 1983, the crew of “Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan” filmed on location in Cameroon, with Christophe Lambert playing the English lord raised by apes.
Part of the jungle scenes were shot in the forest of what is now Korup National Park, in the country’s southwest. For the waterfall seen in several shots, the crew travelled near Melong, in Moungo department, Littoral region: Ekom-Nkam Falls, fed by the Nkam River, drop about 80 metres through dense forest.
The film was released in 1984. More than forty years on, it remains one of the few Hollywood productions largely shot in Cameroon.
Now open to visitors, Ekom-Nkam Falls is among the most photographed tourist sites in the Littoral region, long after its moment on screen.
