There's no missing it: the Goliath frog (Conraua goliath) holds the record for the largest frog species on Earth. Its biggest specimens, usually females, can grow past 30 centimetres and weigh up to three kilograms — about as much as a well-fed house cat.
This amphibian giant exists nowhere else but a narrow strip of fast-flowing, oxygen-rich rivers in southwestern Cameroon and northern Equatorial Guinea. That narrow range makes it especially vulnerable.
Hunting for food, combined with the destruction of its natural habitat, has led the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to list the species as "Endangered."
