On September 26, the Cameroonian label Muks'Couture will take the stage at the National Museum of African Art, the Smithsonian institution devoted to African art in Washington. The brand, founded by designer Mukwusu Mercy Ntsiih in Yaoundé, will represent Cameroon at the grand runway show of the Pan-African Fabric and Fashion Showcase.
The invitation follows a competition held months earlier. The results of the first-ever Pan-African Fabric Initiative were announced on May 30 in Douala: Muks'Couture finished first, ahead of EBOH Design, the label founded by Anaba Linda Eboh, and Kolo Designz, founded by Douala-based designer Chlautille Fobuzie, which placed third.
The competition did not reward a simple collection but a fabric designed to embody continental unity. The winning pattern combines symbols drawn from nine countries representing North, West, Central, East and Southern Africa, a piece conceived as a shared textile language rather than the folklore of a single nation.
The initiative is led by Shiri Achu, a Cameroonian artist, curator and cultural advocate based in the United States. Launched in 2025, her project aims to establish an annual meeting point between African creators and Western cultural institutions, using the diaspora as a bridge between the two continents.
The Smithsonian stop gives this first edition a platform that a strictly local runway show could not have achieved. For Muks'Couture, a young house based in Yaoundé, it means direct exposure to an American museum and diplomatic audience, far from Cameroon's usual fashion circuits.
The initiative does not intend to stop at this first American stage. Its organizers have announced plans to expand to Ethiopia and other countries already represented on the fabric, with the ambition of turning this textile gathering into a recurring pan-African event rather than a one-off moment.
