Félix Tshisekedi announced on August 25, 2026 the launch of a national dialogue for peace, cohesion and state renewal in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The principle had first been set out on July 15, following a meeting with leaders of the country's main religious denominations.

The process will begin with consultations in the country's 26 provinces — their official number since the 2015 territorial redistricting — before concluding with national conclaves in Kinshasa. It is limited to three months and will bring together the ruling majority, the opposition, civil society and religious groups; those still fighting with weapons will be excluded.

An organizing committee is to be set up by decree in the coming days to set the precise schedule for provincial forums.

By choosing to start at the provincial level rather than with a centralized dialogue in Kinshasa, Tshisekedi is seeking to root the process in local realities, away from the power games concentrated in the capital.

The bet remains risky: previous Congolese national dialogues have not always produced tangible results, and part of the opposition, along with observers, fears a maneuver to buy time rather than resolve the persistent security crises in the country's east.

For Central Africa, the outcome of this three-month dialogue will serve, depending on how it goes, as either a model or a cautionary tale on the region's major countries' ability to address their internal fractures through dialogue rather than security responses alone.
