With the holiday season underway, Cameroonian authorities have moved to bolster road safety. On July 2 in Douala, the Littoral Regional Transport Authority launched the special road‑safety campaign “Accident‑Free Holidays,” which will run until September 30.
The initiative aims to tighten road safety and crack down on violations and illegal transport. Checks will focus on high‑risk pick‑up points, travel agencies and the accident‑prone Bekoko area, with particular attention to drivers’ documentation, vehicle technical inspections, seat‑belt use, compliance with speed limits, signage and driving rules in rainy conditions.
The Ministry of Transport is urging drivers to strictly observe the traffic code, especially regarding speed limits, vehicle technical condition, seat‑belt use and the prohibition of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Authorities also announced intensified inspections aided by advanced technology, including an intelligent video‑citation system to detect violations.
Any offender will face the automatic application of penalties stipulated by current regulations. The campaign is crucial to prevent road accidents, which are often the result of negligence and disregard for traffic rules.
The fallout from road crashes can be devastating, not only for victims and their families but also for the economy and society at large. It is therefore essential that drivers recognize the importance of road safety and adhere to traffic regulations.
The Littoral Regional Transport Authority hopes the campaign will help lower the number of road accidents during the holidays and the start of the school year. Authorities call on all road users to stay vigilant and obey traffic rules to ensure maximum road safety.
