One more ribbon for a diaspora diplomat. On Friday, August 28, 2026, Dr. Arikana Chiedzo Chihombori, president of the African Diaspora Development Institute (ADDI), was elevated to Officer of the Order of Merit of Administration and Labor, with the "Friendship and Cooperation" clasp, by Burkina Faso's authorities.

The honor was presented by Foreign Affairs Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, on behalf of transitional President Captain Ibrahim Traoré. The government described the ceremony as recognition of the official's commitment to African solidarity and her organization's support for Burkina Faso's current political direction.

Founded to reconnect Afro-descendants with their continental roots, ADDI has built its profile in recent years around return and investment programs aimed at the Black American and Caribbean diaspora. Burkina Faso, which has embraced a sovereigntist rhetoric since Captain Traoré took power, has made the institute one of its key partners on this front.

The timing is not incidental. Three days earlier, on August 31, Burkina Faso's media regulator, the Conseil supérieur de la communication, authorized two pan-African outlets to broadcast from the country: a television channel and an online radio station run by Pan-African News Networks Global (PANNG), a network also represented by Dr. Chihombori.

ADDI makes no secret of its ambition to build, around these media tools, a continuous platform for its pan-Africanist message, echoing positions held by several West African transitional governments. For Ouagadougou, the stakes also include having outlets able to carry the Sahel Alliance's narrative internationally.

Dr. Chihombori said she was moved by the welcome, telling the ceremony it is "always a great pleasure to talk about Burkina Faso to the world." Beyond the protocol symbolism, the honor cements a bilateral relationship between a country seeking new allies outside conventional diplomatic channels and a diaspora figure seeking institutional footholds on the continent.
