Five tracks, one Top 10, zero confirmed face. That is the paradox Cameroonian artist Babal has imposed on the local music scene since July 2026, when his EP B.A.B.A.L.png placed five songs simultaneously on the Apple Music Cameroon chart, with the single TROBU.png at number one.
The feat is striking for a name that was unknown just weeks earlier. It was enough to push continental heavyweights like Fally Ipupa, Asake, and Himra down the same chart — a rare outcome for an emerging Cameroonian artist competing against established international catalogs.
Babal's visual identity is built precisely on this absence of a conventional one. His tracks carry names lifted from computer file extensions — TROBU.png, CTRL+Z.ppt, or Syndrome du sauveur.rare — forming a deliberately geeky aesthetic far removed from the usual codes of Cameroonian urban music. The artist has revealed neither his real name, his age, nor his hometown.
That vagueness has been filled in by social media rather than by the artist himself. Influential figures such as Coco Emilia, Rosine Ngeumgaing, and Céleste Victorien widely shared his tracks, amplifying a digital word-of-mouth that preceded any public appearance.
Babal eventually did appear on stage, without lifting the veil on his background: first at Berry Boys Club in Douala in June, then at Mimie's concert at the Palais des Congrès in Yaoundé on July 25, and finally alongside DOPELYM at the Hôtel de Ville esplanade on August 1. Those appearances confirmed his physical existence without answering the questions around his identity.
The mystery has even fueled a persistent rumor: that his production is entirely AI-generated. Concert organizers and witnesses to his live performances deny it, but doubt lingers in the comments — a sign that, in the streaming era, questions about an artist's authenticity can weigh as heavily as the music itself.
