The Saint-Étienne saga surrounding David Mimbang has found its ending far from France's Ligue 2. The young Cameroonian midfielder, who arrived in France earlier this year to join AS Saint-Étienne's academy, has ultimately headed to Denmark and then the United States, where he will begin his professional career.
Talks with Les Verts had nonetheless progressed well in the spring, before stalling over a disagreement about the role reserved for Mimbang in the professional squad for the coming season. His entourage then chose to explore other options, notably in Scandinavia, rather than wait behind Saint-Étienne's pecking order.
It was ultimately FC Nordsjælland, a Danish club known for developing young talents before selling them on, that had him sign his very first professional contract, reported by several specialist outlets to run until 2031. The Danish club immediately loaned him out, however, to San Diego FC, its partner franchise in Major League Soccer.
According to San Diego FC's official announcement, Mimbang will play as a midfielder through the end of the 2027 MLS season, as part of the partnership linking the two clubs. The player occupies an international roster slot and had to obtain a P1 visa to move to the United States.
Born on 15 August 2008, Mimbang made a name for himself in 2025 with Cameroon's youth teams, having come through the Brasseries du Cameroun football academy. At the 2025 U17 Africa Cup of Nations, he was named the tournament's best player after four starts, one goal and 360 minutes played, before helping Cameroon win the U17 UNIFFAC title the same year.
At 18, the Cameroonian midfielder is now set to discover North American football rather than Ligue 2, a career choice embraced by those around him to secure him immediate playing time rather than a place on the bench in France.
