Eighteen months after a €15 million transfer that was meant to launch him among the elite, Mathis Amougou is changing clubs again. The 20-year-old Franco-Cameroonian midfielder, under contract with RC Strasbourg until 2030, has been loaned to Toulouse FC for the 2026-2027 season, with no purchase option attached.

His recent path illustrates the detours a promising career can take. Trained at AS Saint-Étienne, Amougou joined Chelsea in the summer of 2024 for around €15 million. He played only two matches for the Blues before being sold on to RC Strasbourg, another club owned by the BlueCo group.

At Strasbourg, competition in midfield limited his playing time, prompting the Alsace club to agree to this new loan. Toulouse, also a Ligue 1 side, offers him a different setting in which to try to establish himself.

Born on 18 January 2006 in Blanc-Mesnil, Amougou holds dual French and Cameroonian nationality. His progress is being watched closely by observers of Cameroonian football, who see him as a profile capable of eventually strengthening the Indomitable Lions' midfield.

For now, Toulouse offers the former Saint-Étienne man something simple: playing time, which he has lacked most since leaving the Loire region in 2024.
