The saga lasted all summer. Frank Magri, the 26-year-old Cameroonian international striker, has signed with Qatari club Al-Gharafa SC on a two-year contract with a one-year option, ending weeks of speculation over his next destination.
The forward was coming off a mixed spell at Toulouse FC, where his contract was not renewed at the end of the season. Over four years in Toulouse colors since arriving from Bastia in 2023, he made 89 appearances and scored 16 goals, only five of them in his final Ligue 1 campaign across 17 appearances.
His free-agent status drew plenty of interest. In the United States, New York City FC put forward a concrete offer before Burnley, newly promoted in England, joined the race. German clubs also showed interest without ever following through.
In France, OGC Nice pushed hardest, backed by coach Olivier Pantaloni, who knew the Cameroonian striker well from having worked with him previously at another club. The option went nowhere, with the former Toulouse man opting not to return directly to Ligue 1.
The choice of Qatar breaks from the habits of the current generation of Indomitable Lions, who more often gravitate toward a fresh start in Europe or a first taste of North America. Al-Gharafa SC, a storied club in Qatari football, is banking on the Ligue 1 and Europa League experience Magri has built up in recent seasons to strengthen its attack.
For Magri, the stakes go beyond the Gulf contract itself: staying visible enough to keep influencing the Indomitable Lions coach's selections, at a time when several fixtures of Cameroon's attack are also navigating contractual uncertainty. The Qatari league, far less exposed to European media than Ligue 1, represents a riskier bet in that respect than staying in Europe.
